Predictable

There are some stories on NOLA.com where there is absolutely no possibility that people aren't going to post racist rants. For instance, on January 5, NOLA.com ran an AP story about a new edition of Mark Twain's works that "replac[e] the N-word with 'slave' in an effort not to offend readers."

Sure enough:

Now the liberals want to rewrite history to appease the minorities. Well folks you can't change history and only can change the future. How abouth this fact if I could change history they should never have been brought to this country. We would be better off and there would be virtually no crime.
While several people posted comments taking issue with goatknees view of history, it remains up on the website more than a week after it was posted.

In an effort to gauge the efficacy of NOLA.com's moderation, I just used the link to report inappropriate context, writing, "This is clearly racist and inappropriate. Please send me an email to confirm receipt." The following message appeared on the screen: "Objectionable Content Reported Your report was successfully submitted. Our editors have been notified. Thank you for your feedback." It is currently 4:10 p.m. on Weds., January 12, 2010. I will post an update in the event that the "editors" take action.

    The comment by goatknees was removed, as of this morning, January 13, 2011. So at least we know that there is someone there, some of the time, reviewing content noted as objectionable by readers.

    For what it's worth I was on a panel at Loyola some years ago. We spoke to a journalism class about the issue of comments in internet forums, and a couple reps from TP/nola.com were on the panel with me. I wish I had a clearer memory of what they said!
